Forum: feature_films Subject: What a great idea?

I'm a little hesitant to post this in reply to Moongleam's observation about USB external hard drives, but some crazy guy (me) has just built a website devoted to that idea.

There's absolutely no spam involved in this as nothing is offered for sale, no prices, gimmicks, etc. It will be a bit longer for that. But there are some nice poster galleries, especially film noir. Lots of films, too, but nothing for people here to get excited about as you all have seen them here or uploaded them here. Risking your critical derision, the new site is www.mightydrives.com. I repeat, nothing at all is offered for sale!

On another subject, I noticed one of the films I uploaded here has now been downloaded 25,0000 times. I also watched as it (and others) spread across, literally, the world, as they began appearing at various venues. Internet Archive has made that possible, has made that easy. If that isn't nice, I don't know what is.

Yes, I may try to do that. There are also another couple of serials on my site that IA doesn't have.

I actually have stopped uploading to IA because they publish uploaders' email addresses with every upload, which is very harvestable and very bad. I really love IA, but this burns me up.

By the way, I got that Canadian Mounties serial at

http://www.serialsandsuch.com/

This guy has stuff I have not seen elsewhere and lots of it.

The ones I got were fine, although the size and bitrate could have impressed me more. Anyway, I'm just passing this along as I have not heard this site ever mentioned as a source, and he does have lots and lots of serials.

Yes he does have lots available, and he is a very quick shipper. I checked the chapter files for Black Widow and they are about 125mb mpeg files at 352x240. The other set I got was about the same.

I went there just now and I (duh) couldn't find an email link to click on, so good luck there. See ya

there is a "click on me to get o/s post rates". we have friends in USofA so we can use that address and have them sent on here.

Just a thought, but you could register with an email address for an email account you rarely use. I keep a Yahoo! account for registering at iffy websites just for that purpose.

Yes, that's a way to do it. Because I have 3 websites right now (2 more than I need!), I luckily have thousands of email addresses available.

But that's moving in the wrong direction, I think. Unless IA changes this basic flaw in the system, it is only a matter of time before these email addresses are harvested. Depending on who gets them, many people will find they have to get rid of a long held and cherished email address.

It is flat wrong to expose the email addresses of others. As much as I admire IA for it's many great contributions, I would like some action on this issue. Last year, when this was brought up on the forum, there was finally a reply from someone who seemed in authority here. But it was a non-responsive reply. He's Rupert Martin, and his non-responsive response is here:

As mentioned earlier in this thread, I have a movie related site going up right now. Wouldn't it be great if I had an email list of hard core film junkies like ourselves? Spam Heaven!

Not. I want this poor practice stopped. Guyzilla and Finnobrit both have offered simple solutions to this security gap, but nothing has ever happened.

Oh, well . . .

I remember discussing this last year, and I agreed then and I agree now that leaving our email addresses harvestable is a terrible practice.

Hope you do upload some new serials.
